Yahn Janou, Artist – The power of a minimalist approach

Coming from the automotive world, Yahn Janou first studied automotive design. This initial background still influences his painting today, where the importance given to line, light and the dynamics of movement reveals a sensitivity built in the world of functional form.

Yahn Janou’s art raises the question: ‘Is he a true impressionist?’ Behind the apparent simplicity of his canvases lies a genuine study of light, contrast and matter. He works in oil on linen canvas, using broad brushstrokes that allow his gestures to speak for themselves. His often generous use of paint alternates with light, almost transparent washes, which give his works a striking sense of breath and freedom.

By limiting his palette to two, three or four colours, Janou reinforces the visual impact of each canvas. This deliberate restriction reveals a keen mastery of values and chromatic subtleties. Successive layers, transparent or dense, allow the viewer to perceive subtle nuances in hue and luminosity. This deliberate minimalism – consisting of a limited palette, expressive material and broad, precise gestures – does not seek to demonstrate anything. It aims for the essential, for direct emotion, in a style of painting that is both controlled and vibrant.
